Today's plan - Rocky Gorge v Schuylkill Exiles - Part I

Today is another day shooting, but not blindly shooting, but shooting to a plan.
Trying new things, improving on past lessons, etc.

One lesson today - rain.
Yes, it is raining, and scheduled to start snowing. On the last day of winter. Thrills.
I'm ready, with two different sets of bags to put over the cameras and lenses.
Physically, I have extra layers underneath so the chill won't run through me. Will this be enough? Do I need a parka? I'll bring a little bit of everything.

Today's shoot - club play. Rocky Gorge vs Schuylkill Exiles from Philadelphia.
Should I be rooting for the Philadelphia team, being from Philadelphia?
Probably not; I don't know any of those players. I'm getting to know the Rocky Gorge players so I can predict their moves - who will be kicking, who will have the explosive tackles, who will surprise me.

Equipment:
Nikon D2H with Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens.
Nikon 7200 with Sigma 300 2.8 lens
Gitzo monopod for the 7200, Joby slings on both, with Indigo tethers .
Hoodman loupe

Usually I use the D2H with the 300m lens because I like the burst speed of the D2H.
However, today's practice or planned technique is to use the 7200 on manual mode.
It's not as fast, but I want to focus on manual, so I'll be shooting with that all day, therefore I need the best lens for that. The D2H will be on a sling at my hip for close-up shooting.

Manual mode settings
White balance - cloudy, as it will be raining/snowing.
Aperture 2.8. Fixed
Shutter speed starts at 1000, maybe down to 500.
ISO - set to auto ISO, with a max ISO of ???.
I'll be watching what the ISO values  go to. If it starts to go high (grainy) I'll alter the shutter speed.

The point is to learn to watch the settings all day, checking sharpness through the loupe.
I'm trying to find the sweet spot of exposure (no blown highlights), fast shutter speed to capture action, low ISO so it isn't grainy. Is that too much to ask?

Maintaining prior lessons on focus, trying to keep the focus point on the active person.

Also, shooting low. I'm bringing a cane chair so I can shoot lower to the ground.
Part of the shoot will be at the try line, part of it roaming.

It's getting late, gotta go.
Ciao!
